Jeremy Preston, violinist

Violinist Jeremy Preston holds the Principal Second Violin chair of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and is a tenured member of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. He has served as Concertmaster of the Mendocino Music Festival and Associate Concertmaster of the Oakland East Bay Symphony, and spent seven seasons as a tenured member of the North Carolina Symphony.

Chamber music sits at the center of his musical life. A former member of the North Carolina String Quartet, he has appeared regularly with the Mallarmé Chamber Players, New Music Raleigh, and the Eastern Music Festival Chamber Players, and continues to perform on stages throughout the Bay Area.

Preston earned his Bachelor of Music from Rice University and his Master of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music, following additional training at the New England Conservatory. His principal teachers include Marylou Speaker Churchill, Lynn Chang, Kathleen Winkler, Sally Thomas, and William Preucil. His chamber music coaches have included Norman Fisher, Pamela and Claude Frank, and members of the Cleveland and Juilliard Quartets.

Off the stage, he maintains an active private teaching studio at his home in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood.

A studio for thoughtful, ambitious playing.

Jeremy helps violinists build the physical ease, musical independence, and attentive listening that let confident playing take shape.

His teaching brings together healthy technical foundations, Suzuki-informed pedagogy, and decades of experience inside the San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet orchestras. Lessons are shaped around the individual: their sound, their questions, and the musician they are becoming.
